As I said a week ago, we watched a great film. The classic horror movie called Frankenstein. I don’t usually watch horror movies but this movie intrigued me and hence not only did I watch it, I have since started reading reviews about it from sites like Oh! The horror and The Onion.

The first review I read is by a big horror movie buff Brett Gallman who started to love horror movies due to his father and Frankenstein holds a very nostalgic place in his heart, “the film reminded me why I watch horror films in the first place: to be transported to another place and time and be entertained for a couple of hours. While Frankenstein is without a doubt a classic, the film is also just plain fun. I’ve seen it a hundred times, but it’s just as satisfying now as it was when I was younger.” I totally agree with what he says, Frankenstein is a classic, it is also fun to watch I myself witnessed that and even though this was my first viewing of the movie, would not mind watching it again either. This movie is set in as mr. Gallman says, “The film is set in an unnamed European country during an unnamed time.” Which lends to its scary and fantastical image.

Keith Phipps in ‘The Onion AV club’ also makes a god point when he says, “With his dull eyes, flat head, working-man’s clothes, and bolt-adorned neck, the creature entered the public consciousness seemingly instantly and forever.” The iconic image of the monster portrayed in the movie has replaced the original monster of Mary Shelley’s book and inspired, “countless remakes, parodies, and homages.” The monsters first entrance in the film also lends to its iconic status, as Gallman describes it, “the Monster lurches backwards into the frame before the camera captures a haunting, empty gaze from Karloff’s eyes. Furthermore, the Monster’s face is seemingly plastered with an eerie grin that contributes to the creature’s creepiness.”

Such is the iconic movie Frankenstein that it has hooked on generations from, Mr. Gallman’s father, Mr. Gallman and Mr. Phipps and now me. this is why Frankenstein is one of the greatest movies ever made.

We saw a great movie last week, Frankenstein, released in 1931 captured audiences imaginations and inspired the legend of Frankenstein to new and greater heights. The Frankenstein of today is more inspired by this movie than Shelley’s novel. The eloquent giant in the book gives way to a dumb beast with a brain of a criminal. A blog-post on the movie from classic-horror.com written by Nate Yapp says the same thing. Yapp writes in his blog, “A flat-top head, a pair of bolts in the neck, and a skin tone ranging from gray to green – show that to anybody, and they’ll say “Frankenstein.” A little research will show that such a description didn’t come from Mary Shelley’s novel. Frankenstein (or, more accurately, Frankenstein’s Monster) may have started out as a character in a book, but it was in James Whale’s 1931 classic (and very loose) adaptation that he achieved cultural godhood – and it’s not hard to see why.”

Nate Yapp in this blog-post goes on to describe the plot of the movie, the opening scene of a funeral with Dr. Frankenstein watching with his assistant Fritz as they plan to steal the body once its buried, which Yapp says, “begins a tale of obsession, madness, and perverted science that can only end in tears and tragedy. “ The creation of the monster in the laboratory during a wild thunderstorm with which the monster comes alive is also an iconic scene of the movie which has been repeated countless times. The movie goes on as the monster kills his first victim, Fritz who had been terrorizing him, and then escapes the laboratory to terrorize the town and ruin Dr. Frankenstein’s wedding which ends in a witch-hunt for the monster and ends in a “fiery climax” with the monster trapped in a wind-mill which is lit on fire after he has injured his creator.

Nate Yapp also comments on the star-cast, the iconic design of the monster’s make-up which was pretty revolutionary at the time along with the way the movie was made. In conclusion I would say the same thing Nate says,” This is Classic Horror at its most classic. Everything that this website stands for follows from this movie. Seek it out. Buy it. Watch it until you too are a screaming madman bent on creating life from dead tissue. Become one with the phenomenon that sprang from a single film.”

well it is the era of the DJs in the music world any song you hear is bound to be a remix, the black eyed peas are doing it most of their new songs are old classics to which they have given new vocals and clubby beats so that people are jamming to it in clubs while in the good old days people would be listening to them on a record player by the fire-place. But music is not the only thing that is being remixed.

movies, fashion, books, science everything has been remixed since the dawn of time. Newton’s three laws of motion the fundamental laws of modern-day physics are actually a remixed version of what Galileo Galilei and Archimedes had proposed before. most movies nowadays are also remixed version of previous movies or books. historically, adaptations have been the most successful grossers and the biggest hits in film industries world-wide. a single look at the list of movies running near you will prove it most recent movies have been adaptations from books or comics or remakes of old movies.

there are a lot of sit-coms that are running that are running on tv nowadays. if you watch these closely you will see a lot of similarities to the really popular sit-com Friends. shows like How I Met Your Mother and the Big Bang Theory share the ‘ensemble’ concept which Freinds became famous for in which the story is about a group of friends who share the screen as equals and none of them have a more central role. the iconic apartment setting has been used over and over again not just in these two shows but also in other sit-coms.The Central park coffee shop in Freinds has also been re-mixed. it has been replaced by the Mclaren’s pub in How I Met Your Mother and to a lesser extent the Cheese Cake Factory in the Big Bang Theory.

so in conclysion i would like to say everything in the world IS a remix, we are influenced by the things we witness and consciously or unconsciously these influences reflect in the work you do throughout your lives, they become embedded in our culture. like Friends changed pop-culture with joey’s How you doin became a great pick up line the world over, as star wars became a cult film, as DJs became the artists the world will keep getting remixed by new and old phenomenons alike.

well i guess it is a bad idea to start my first blog for this english class with a french title but i am going to do it anyway. my reason it gives everyone an idea about my subject, me. Yes and i do know french. my name is Sambhav Dhruv, but people here call me Sam, I am from Mumbai, India and I am doing first-year engineering here at Purdue University. well you could have guessed the last bit of information, I am indian ofcourse and for some strange reason we all come here for engineering. when i meet a fellow indian i dont ask him whats his major, i start by asking him if he finished the engr 132 home work.

moving on to other things let me answer some frequently asked questions, yes, i have seen slumdog millionare, infact i know the guy who acted in it and no that doesnt mean i live in a slum. now that we got that out of the way let me tell you more about myself, i love to play and watch sports especially soccer , i am a big fan of chelsea f.c. in the barclays premier league and i consider didier drogba as my God and like every other indian i adore the game of cricket, we indians love this game so much that we watch one game for 5 straight days yes, thats how much a classic match of cricket lasts for. we can never get bored of it, being the world champs is also a big boost to our pride. i am also an avid reader i will devour any books you give, i dont stop reading until and unless i have finished the book. i mostly read fantasy fiction but i am trying to broaden my horizon as i am currently reading Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.

Well to sum it all up i am just a regular guy who likes his sports and his books, i dont get the time to do much more. This is me. well see you’ll in class.
